4 Course Valentine's Dinner at Bengawan ~ Keraton Jakarta

We were so privileged to be two of the very first customers to preview (food taste) the upcoming 2019 Valentine's Dinner at Bengawan Restaurant, Keraton Jakarta. Currently, Bengawan is led by Chef Rafa Gil (Director of Culinary at Keraton Jakarta) whom some of you might recognize from Netflix's "The Final Table" series! Doesn't it sound really cool to be able to taste his masterpiece! This food tasting seemed like a Chef to Table experience because he was in charge for every single thing during our dining (including serving the food to our table). This time he is preparing 4 course meal exclusively for 14 February 2019 with surprising ingredients and flavor. Very excited to share our experience here, let's check it out!
Bengawan Restaurant is located at the 7th floor of Keraton Jakarta (next to Plaza Indonesia). It is actually the only all day dining restaurant at Keraton Jakarta. On weekdays & Saturday, the restaurant serves variety of ala carte dishes ranging from Indonesian, Italian, Western to Japanese. While on Sunday, they serve Sunday Brunch (buffet) from 12 - 3 PM. Just as a reminder that 14 February 2019 is Thursday and we believe the restaurant is going to be very packed!
 Here are some shots of our beautifully decorated table.
Let's start our 4 course meal with the first starter ~ Smoked salmon roulade with blue crab, cucumber jelly, avocado cream and caviar. Basically the base is cold blue crab meat covered with fresh salmon sashimi, then topped with 2 kinds of caviar (orange and black colored) and unique sambal matah on edible leaf. The white sugary one is the sambal matah, we know you won't believe it but it indeed has that onion aftertaste in your mouth. Well, don't expect it to be spicy because it's not, but spot on for the sambal matah flavor! 
We love the sweetness of the blue crab, it reminds us of the flavor of inari sushi (sushi covered with sweet tofu skin). On the side, there's avocado puree mixed with a little bit of wasabi and also cucumber jelly which has that aloe vera alike texture). We really love this whole concept, its a 10/10 dish! Well Done!
The second course is Hokkaido Scallops with small chunk of crispy beef bacon, green peas puree and honeydew foam. Hokkaido Scallops is very popular in Japanese restaurant around the world. Though we have to admit that after tasting the amazing first course, this was somehow a little bit of downward. It wasn't that bad actually, but our palate was already surprised with the peak one. In our opinion, the seasonings and the whole combination didn't really give that extra kicking flavor. The honeydew foam was brilliant though, we could taste the sweetness of the honeydew.
Here comes the king of the meal ~ Rossini which is thick chunk of beef tenderloin with mashed potato, topped with foie gras, black truffle and truffle sauce. It was clearly one of the most genius combination of steak and foie gras (indeed our first time having this combination). The medium beef with pinkish middle was amazingly tender and juicy with intense truffle flavor. The foie gras was OH SO GOOD! It was smooth and creamy which reminded us of smooth chocolate. This whole combination is highly recommended and in fact should be put on ala carte restaurant menu!
Another option for the main course (3rd course) if you don't eat beef is Baramundi with lemon mashed potato, clams and salsa verde dressing. Its a pan fried barramundi drizzled with some sort of blended vegetables and herbs sauce. Flavor wise, the seasoning of barramundi was not as strong as the beef one. Because the truffle flavor on the beef was quite intense. Nonetheles, its still a tasty dish for your Valentine's Dinner.
The last course aka the dessert ~ Mousse Cake covered in glossy layer of chocolate, chili and strawberry. Yes you heard it right, there's a hint of chili from this layer which you can taste it a little bit on your throat. The mousse itself was really smooth and unbelievably good! It wasn't overly sweet and thick. On the side, there's a unique jelly made with intense champagne resulting in a bitter champagne flavor. You might like it or hate it :)
Verdict: The Valentine's Dinner package is IDR 1.250.000++ per couple which is surprisingly below the average price for a 5 star hotel. Seriously, most other restaurant may charge you more than that per pax. The package includes 4 course meal (the same as what we reviewed above) and bottomless water. Coffee, Juice, Mocktail, Cocktail or Wine can be ordered separately.
